REFLECTING ON 2023
A Year of Style, Sustainability, and Self-Discovery
Plot Twist! Whenever I'm asked to describe the year 2023. It truly was and in the most pleasantly surprising way possible. Like most of us, I started the year with my mind set on my goals but a little voice whispered “focus on the goals but be fluid on how you achieve them”. And boy, what a beautiful ride it has been. As I reflected on the chapters of 2023, I found myself immersed in gratitude. It's been a year of milestones, growth, realized dreams, endless possibilities and countless moments that have shaped me as a person. With all its highs and lows, it’s been incredible to say the least.
SOOTHE MY SPACE, my cherished corner on the internet, transformed into the platform where I cultivated my passion for styling intimate spaces, securing opportunities of a lifetime and connecting with amazing individuals who profoundly enriched both my personal and professional journey. This recap is therefore a celebration of the moments that shaped me throughout the year. And I openly share it hoping it will inspire you to be and do more. To follow your dreams. To take bold steps even when you don't know where they'll lead to. To show up and keep going with or without fear. To bet on yourself. You are capable of anything you set your mind to!
Looking back, I really delved deeper into my love for styling intimate events and simultaneously embraced the principles of sustainable, slow, and intentional living (a new territory I'm still familiarizing myself with). From styling events for restaurant menu launches to styling pop-up shops for like-minded brands, and even styling an intimate group therapy session, every experience has added a layer of richness to my professional and personal growth.
So without further ado let’s take a delightful plunge into the awesome professional highlights I enjoyed this past year!
One of the undeniable highlights of the year was the opportunity to collaborate with Kohler Africa – a dream client whose name resonates with quality and innovation in the design world. Styling their networking event after the launch of their newest showroom was not just a project; it was a manifestation of a dream. The chance to weave my creativity into a space that echoed Kohler's brand identity was both thrilling and humbling. Not gonna lie. I had a few sleepless nights. This project stretched me but I wouldn't have made it without an amazing team that allowed my creativity to take center stage.
But the excitement didn't stop there. The Hills Collection, a brand close to my heart, entrusted me with their aesthetics. Styling for them felt like an artistic collaboration, a dance between their vision and my interpretation. Creating an immersive space for one of their biggest pop-up markets was an opportunity to not just showcase products but to curate an experience for customers to connect intimately with what Hills Collection represents.
Beyond the corporate sphere, the year unfolded with styling for elite clients who discovered my work through Instagram. To see my designs resonate with people, forming connections that transcended the virtual space, was a testament to the power of visual storytelling.
Networking events organized by Female Leading Organically gave me the opportunity to contribute to a community that empowers women. Styling spaces where women came together to uplift each other felt like an extension of my values merging seamlessly with my profession. Restaurants like The Vanguard became my creative playground, curating different events within their space. Each event was a new challenge, a fresh opportunity to transform spaces and evoke emotions.
On a personal level, 2023 was the year I explored the world of sustainable and slow living. It wasn't just about incorporating eco-friendly elements into my designs; it was a conscious decision to align my values with my work. I boldly declared my interest in sustainability, taking the time to educate myself before disseminating valuable content in 2024.Watch this space!
Among my personal achievements, a standout moment was my investment in self-growth by attending the Index interior design conference in Dubai. The experience was nothing short of life-changing. Surrounded by industry experts, innovative designs, and a wealth of knowledge, I found myself immersed in a dynamic learning environment. The conference not only broadened my perspective on interior design but also ignited a newfound inspiration that continues to fuel my creative journey. This decision to invest in my professional development was undeniably one of the most rewarding choices I made in 2023, leaving an indelible mark on my skills and passion for design.
2023 taught me the beauty of stretching beyond my perceived limits. Taking leaps of faith and seizing opportunities that might not have fitted my typical mold but resonated with my values and goals proved to be transformative. The connections I made, the relationships built, and the memories created with incredible individuals have left me feeling beyond blessed.
To be honest, as I go through my photos, there are so many experiences and wonderful moments that took place in 2023 but I cant share all of them on this blog. But allow me to share some lessons most of those experiences taught me.
Stepping out of your comfort zone will deliver a ripple effect of opportunities
This lesson proved itself repeatedly throughout the year. Each time I pushed beyond the boundaries of my comfort zone, whether in styling concepts or collaboration ventures, a ripple effect of opportunities followed. It taught me that growth lies in discomfort and that embracing uncertainty often leads to the most fulfilling paths.
2. Balance (or at least attempting it) is Key to Sustainable Success
As I explored sustainable and slow living, I learnt the importance of balance. Balancing work with self-care and rest is not selfish but a necessity. Although I faced moments of burnout, I take pride in recognizing when I needed to step back and prioritize self-restoration. One standout memory from the year was an impromptu trip to Maasai Mara with my friends. Despite a hectic workload, I spontaneously embraced the opportunity, and it turned out to be the most rewarding "YES" I uttered in 2023. If this doesn't serve as a clear sign to go ahead and book that trip you've been contemplating, I'm not sure what else you might be waiting for.
3. Resilience in the Face of Setbacks
The year was not without its challenges, but each setback became a lesson in resilience. Whether it was a design idea that didn't resonate or a project that faced unexpected hurdles, maintaining composure and adapting became crucial.
4. Continuous Learning Enhances Expertise:
One of my greatest achievements was attending the INDEX Dubai Interior Design Conference. I learned. I networked. I discovered. I explored. It was such a wholesome experience. Actively investing in opportunities for education and skill development is a key lesson in self-growth and self-discovery. Embracing a mindset of continuous learning, whether through conferences, workshops, or online courses, to stay ahead in your field and enhance your expertise is so important.
Its already been a week into the new year and I have a great feeling it's going to be one for the books! For both you and I.
So as it unfolds, I carry forward a treasure trove of experiences and lessons. With gratitude in my heart and a deep sense of purpose, I aspire to walk boldly into the person I was created to be. The lessons learned, the connections made, and the growth experienced will be the guiding stars as I navigate through the opportunities and challenges that 2024 will undoubtedly bring.
