CONNECTING THE DOTS: SUSTAINABLE ENERGY, INTERIOR DESIGN & THE POWERING AFRICA SUMMIT 2024

Happy New Month and happy end of Quarter 1!!!
Honestly, I can’t comprehend how fast time is moving but I choose to keep up and remain grateful! Please do the same— for sanity’s sake:)
March has been the shortest and busiest month I’ve had so far. I had the incredible privilege of beginning my month in Washington, DC, and ending it in China. But before we get into that, let me remind you how attending the Inaugural Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi last year was a pivotal moment for me. It illuminated the deep connection between sustainability and slow living – an intentional approach to life that resonated deeply with me. This awakening sparked a journey of exploration into the intersection between sustainability and its various facets, including how it influences our daily lives and, more specifically, in interior design. Proudly and deeply committed to sustainability, I believe that our choices in design have a profound impact on the environment.
So when the opportunity came to participate in the 9th Powering Africa Summit in Washington DC as a delegate of the SMACHS Foundation, I enthusiastically seized it. SMACHS Foundation is run by young people who are passionate about empowering fellow young people to be at the forefront of fighting food insecurity and climate change in Kenya (you can find out more about them in the link below) and the summit's focus was on accelerating energy access across the continent. It was enlightening, powerful, and inspiring. It shed light on the crucial role energy plays in shaping our homes and communities.
Organized by the remarkable team at EnergyNet, the summit convened high-level stakeholders from across the globe. The opening remarks by Samantha Power of USAID underscored the enduring commitment of the United States to supporting Africa's energy development. Discussions covered critical topics such as addressing debt challenges, navigating sovereign guarantee issues, and maximizing Africa's energy potential through enhanced transmission infrastructure. Nigeria's active engagement further emphasized its dedication to tackling energy access issues both domestically and internationally.
A standout moment from the summit was the Celebration Dinner commemorating International Women's Day, which highlighted the indispensable role of women in driving economic development, including within the energy sector. It served as a poignant reminder that sustainability encompasses not only environmental conservation but also social equity and empowerment.
But how does all of this relate to interior design? The answer lies in the interconnectedness of our choices. Energy choices impact every aspect of our lives, including the homes we live in. From heating systems to appliances, energy plays a crucial role in shaping our living spaces.
Consider, for instance, the decision to install solar panels. Not only does it reduce carbon emissions and lower energy bills, but it also aligns with the principles of slow living – prioritizing intentionality and mindfulness. Sustainable energy solutions not only reduce our carbon footprint but also cultivate a deeper appreciation for the resources we have.
I encourage interior designers to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable energy in shaping our living spaces. Through our work, we should aim to inspire others to make informed choices that not only beautify their homes but also contribute to a healthier planet.
Attending the Powering Africa Summit, alongside other young people underscored the collective effort needed for sustainability, emphasizing that sustainable energy is not a privilege but a necessity that impacts us all. It's not only about advocating for clean energy but understanding its intersection with broader societal issues like gender equality and energy poverty. Gender disparities in energy access highlight the urgent need for equitable solutions while addressing energy poverty can catalyze socio-economic development across the continent.
By recognizing the multifaceted nature of sustainable energy, we can better address the interconnected challenges facing our communities. Whether advocating for renewable energy policies, supporting women's entrepreneurship in the clean energy sector, or promoting access to clean cooking technologies, each of us has a role to play in advancing sustainability and building a greener future for all. Let's not forget that by integrating sustainable energy solutions into our lifestyles and homes, we not only embrace intentional living but also contribute to a more equitable and sustainable world for generations to come.
